North Korean Leader’s Seaside Getaway Fuels Speculation Amidst International Scrutiny

In a surprising change of pace, Kim Jong-un recently visited a new coastal resort, a move that hints at North Korea’s aspirations to open up to tourism. This family-friendly trip stands in stark contrast to his usual activities, sparking curiosity about the nation’s future.

A Day at the Beach

Kim, accompanied by his daughter, Kim Ju-ae, and wife, Ri Sol-ju, explored the newly constructed Wonsan Kalma coastal resort. State media reported the leader, dressed in a dark suit, praised the resort as a significant achievement. The family enjoyed the amenities, including waterslides.

The Kims also strolled along a beach, surrounded by officials. The resort, situated on the east coast, features sports facilities and catering services. Authorities expect 20,000 visitors annually once the resort opens on July 1st.

“The wave of the happiness to be raised in the Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area would enhance its attractive name as a world-level tourist cultural resort.”

A recent report by the World Travel & Tourism Council indicates that the global tourism sector’s contribution to GDP is projected to reach $11.6 trillion in 2024, highlighting the potential economic impact of tourism (WTTC, 2024).

Implications and Intrigue

The public appearance of Ri Sol-ju, her first since early 2024, has drawn attention. South Korean media noted she appeared to be carrying a luxury bag, potentially violating sanctions. Furthermore, Kim Ju-ae‘s frequent appearances with her father have fueled speculation about her future role in North Korea’s leadership.

For now, the resort is only open to North Korean citizens. However, this could be the first step towards a broader easing of restrictions on foreign visitors, particularly as the country emerges from its pandemic-era isolation.
