Kim Clijsters “very excited to go to New York and play” at US Open

The Belgian player, who returns from an abdominal injury, is eager to resume official competition.

Kim Clijsters reassured his fans following his abdominal injury sustained at the end of July during his victorious run in World Team Tennis with the New York Empire team. The 37-year-old Limburgian thus confided in an interview on ESPN that she was delighted to play, in ten days, the WTA hard tournament in Cincinnati and that she was impatiently waiting to perform at the US Open, the August 31st.

“I’m very excited to go to New York and play,” she explained. “I haven’t played a full match in singles or doubles (in World Team Tennis), but I played a lot of sets and felt great. Obviously replaying an official tournament is the next step. It will be weird without spectators in the stadium, but it is still a tennis match and I will always have my coach and someone to support me ”.

The former world number one, victorious three times at Flushing Meadows, in 2005, 2009 and 2010, has nothing more to prove anyway. And facing better ranked players does not scare him particularly.

“This comeback is not for the outside world, but really for me,” she continued. “It’s a drive that I have in me. This is what motivates me. If I didn’t have this confidence that I could still play good tennis, then I would never have started. I know that I still have good tennis in me ”.
