The new coronavirus is more contagious than SARS. At the end of January the disease already exceeded the number of SARS cases, and now only in China, where the virus originated, more than 37,000 cases of infection have been counted.
Yesterday there were 2656 new cases in the country. There were fewer than on Friday, when 3399 infections were added. According to epidemiologist Joseph Eisenberg from the University of Michigan, that does not mean that the virus outbreak is under control.
There is still much uncertainty about the exact numbers, he told Reuters news agency. “So maybe the reported cases now peak, but we don’t know what happens to the cases that are not reported. That is mainly a problem in the countryside.”
In the rest of the world, the virus has now surfaced in 27 countries, where a total of 330 people have been infected.
