Joseph DeAngelo, ‘the Golden State killer’ who terrorized California in the 1970s and 1980s, was sentenced to life in prison with no remission after pleading guilty to 13 murders and dozens of rapes, kidnappings and thefts before a court of Sacramento, the state capital.

“I am deeply saddened to have harmed you,” he apologized today to the relatives of the victims sitting in the courtroom.

Thanks to his confession, the former policeman and former Vietnam War veteran, now 74, avoided the death penalty. DeAngelo was only captured in 2018 thanks to a DNA test.
