Kieft praises Dessers: ”A phenomenon”

Cyriel Dessers continues to score and be important for Feyenoord. The Belgian also scored twice last Thursday. Wim Kieft, former football player and columnist of The Telegraph, is very enthusiastic about the striker.

”With Dessers, a phenomenon is emerging at Feyenoord. He scored two great goals, one again deep in stoppage time. The way he turned away on his first goal, not many strikers can do that, especially with Dessers’ posture. It wouldn’t surprise me if he didn’t even know exactly what he was doing with that goal, but it just happened; in a flow”, Kieft begins in his column.

“He is undeniably in such a flow that everything works out. Dessers also radiates that he is full of self-confidence. To be in such a state is wonderful and at the same time something inexplicable. For himself he probably knows that he is not as good as he is manifesting and how he is performing now.” Kieft thinks Dessers has no problem with his role as a pinchhitter. “You want to keep that flow for as long as possible. Therefore, he won’t even mind if he has to start again on the bench next time and is brought in as a substitute for Bryan Linssen. You’re going to find it funny, so to speak, because it works every time.”

Dessers does apply for a starting spot with his goals. Yet the former football player would simply leave Linssen. ”As a coach, it doesn’t seem advisable to me to upset the existing hierarchy in this situation.” Dessers has already scored seven times in fourteen games since his arrival at Feyenoord. The Belgian can be definitively taken over at the end of the season for allegedly 2.8 million euros.
