Kidney patients with corona are more likely to die • RIVM briefing at the House of Representatives

Kidney patients are more prone to serious complications if they have the coronavirus. The mortality among these patients is also high. This has emerged from a survey of Dutch hospitals that is partly funded by the Kidney Foundation.

The study shows that the mortality among dialysis and transplant patients, at 25 percent, is considerably higher than in other patients with extra risks, such as patients with heart failure or lung diseases.

The researchers do not yet know why this is. “Kidney patients do not have a greater chance of becoming infected, but the chance of dying or going to intensive care is a lot higher,” said study leader Ron Gansevoort of the UMC Groningen in the NOS Radio 1 News.

The investigation began in March at the beginning of the corona crisis. The university hospitals in Groningen, Nijmegen and Amsterdam decided to collect data from all over Europe.
