Kidnapping of 8-year-old Mia: what we know

It’s a painstaking job, insisted Nicolas Heitz. This Wednesday, April 14, the public prosecutor of Épinal held a press conference to review the conditions of Mia’s disappearance. The 8-year-old girl was abducted Tuesday from her grandmother’s home. The search is still ongoing although the kidnapping alert was lifted last night.

At least three people involved

Yesterday at the end of the morning, two men rang the bell at the home of Mia’s grandmother, in Les Poullières, in the Vosges. The girl had been living there for a few weeks after the court decided to place her with a trusted person.

They present the grandmother with documents with the letterhead of the ministry of justice and say they are part of the Stemo (territorial educational service in an open environment). After having put in confidence the grandmother, by giving in particular the name of one of the educators of Mia, they assure having to lead her to a meeting where she will meet her mother.

Indeed, Mia’s mother, Lola Montemaggi, can no longer see her daughter alone since an order from the judge who removed the girl of his mother’s violence according to the statements of the prosecutor. Nicolas Heitz refers in particular to verbal assaults, suicide threats and you refusal of schooling of the child.

“A kidnapping by ruse” according to the prosecutor

The two men therefore leave the grandmother’s home, accompanied by Mia, and leave with a third man who was waiting in a car. A few hours after the departure of the two men, whose description was given during the kidnapping alert, the grandmother was taken from a bad intuition and warned the gendarmerie.

That same evening, a kidnapping alert was issued to help find the girl. She was lifted three hours later because the prosecutor did not find it useful to continue the process. Since Tuesday, dozens of investigators have been working on the case.

A search carried out at the home of Mia’s mother

Initial evidence is that Mia’s mother, Lola Montemaggi, could be involved in her kidnapping. The search, carried out this morning at her home in Épinal, did not allow the mother to be found, announces the prosecutor.

At the end of December 2020, Lola Montemaggi also assured that she had plans to go in a motorhome with his daughter in order to go under the company’s radar, according to comments reported by Nicolas Heitz. The mother has also refused for months to discuss with the juvenile judge and does not attend any court summons.

About thirty reports since Tuesday

Research is still ongoing. The prosecutor recalled that any element likely to advance the investigation should be returned as quickly as possible to the investigators. They have also received, since yesterday, about thirty reports.

Mia’s photo must continue to be released, insisted the prosecutor, who held up a portrait of the girl in front of photographers and cameras.

As a reminder, the three men sought are of European type, two are between 25 and 35 years old, one of whom is said to have a cross-shaped tattoo on the neck, and a third between 45 and 50 years old. They may be driven in a Volkswagen vehicle of the anthracite gray transporter type.

Mia is European type, 1.30 m, brown eyes, long brown hair with a fringe carrying small gold earrings with a red design, dressed in black pants, a t-shirt, a gray zipped waistcoat with golden dots, a white puffer jacket with black polka dots and white fur lining.
