The predecessor of Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, was released in 1996 in Japan and in the USA for the SNES and was largely able to get very positive reviews from fans. For the first time in Europe, the RPG developed by Square at the time was made available in 2008 via the Wii Virtual Console. It is very unlikely that there could be an official successor in the near future, yes Dragon Vain Studios, an indie team from Mexico, recently made the ambitious announcement, a spiritual Sequel with the title Another Crusade to develop for PC:
