[비즈니스포스트] Kia released an electric model of its compact car Ray.

Kia launched ‘The Kia Ray EV (Ray EV)’ on the 21st.

Ray EV received more than 6,000 pre-orders for 20 business days from the 24th of last month to the 20th of this month. The pre-order volume is 1.5 times more than this year’s sales target of 4,000 units.

Specifically, individual customers accounted for approximately 55% of all contracts. By age, customers in their 30s and 40s accounted for 72%, with 30% in their 30s and 42% in their 40s.

Ray EV was released in two trims, Light and Air, and three models, each including a 4-seater passenger car, a 2-seater van, and a 1-seater van. The 4-seater model accounted for approximately 89% of all contracts.

Among them, about 89% chose the Air trim, which comes standard with convenience features such as advanced driver assistance systems such as lane maintenance assistance, a fully folding driver’s seat, and a ventilated driver’s seat.

Based on Ray’s design, the Ray EV is equipped with design elements exclusive to electric vehicles (EVs), such as 14-inch alloy wheels and a decoration (garnish) with a charging port in the center of the front.

The interior is equipped with a 10.25-inch cluster (instrument panel) and a column-type electronic shift lever with an integrated start button. The center fascia, where the start button and shift lever were located in the existing Ray internal combustion engine model, has been newly decorated with a horizontal air conditioning switch, display, and storage space.

Ray EV is equipped with a 35.2kWh (kilowatt-hour) lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and has a single-charge driving range of 205km and 233km in the city. The combined fuel efficiency is 5.1km per kWh based on 14-inch tires.

Ray EV can be charged from 10% to 80% of battery capacity by charging for 40 minutes with a 150kW (kilowatt) fast charger, and from 10% to 100% of battery capacity by charging for 6 hours with a 7kW slow charger.

Ray EV’s drive motor produces a maximum output of 64.3kW (about 87 horsepower) and a maximum torque of 147Nm (Newton meters). Compared to the Ray gasoline model’s maximum output of 76ps (horsepower, approximately 55.9kW) and maximum torque of 9.7kgf·m (approximately 95.1Nm), it has improved by approximately 15% and 55%, respectively.

Ray EV is equipped with a ‘full flat’ function that folds all seats and an electric vehicle-specific ‘utility mode’ that allows long-term use of electric devices such as air conditioning and audio when not driving. It is also equipped with an auto-hold function that stops the vehicle in a stopped state without having to press the brake pedal.

The price of Ray EV by trim is 4-seater van △Light 27.75 million won △Air 29.55 million won, 2-seater van △Light 27.45 million won △Air 27.95 million won, 1-seater van △Light 27.35 million won △Air 27.8 million won.

When customers living in Seoul purchase the Ray EV, they can receive a purchase subsidy of 6.47 million won, including national and local government subsidies, so they can purchase the 4-seater light trim for 21.28 million won and the 4-seater passenger car air trim for 23.08 million won.

A Kia official said, “Ray EV is an urban entry-level electric vehicle (EV) with excellent marketability and will be a reasonable means of transportation for compact car customers who want to pursue eco-friendly values.” Reporter Heo Won-seok
