Kevin McCarthy denies Liz Cheney was “disciplined” for defying Trump

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy angrily denied Thursday that his conference’s decision to oust Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney from her leadership position amounted to punishment for his outspoken criticism of former President Donald Trump. .

Cheney, a three-term Republican congresswoman with a 95 percent lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union, was removed as speaker of the House Republican Conference in May with McCarthy’s support, due to her endorsement of the second impeachment trial of Trump and his refusal to stop blaming the former president for his role in fomenting the January 6 insurrection.

A day after Cheney and Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger were the only members of the Republican conference to support the censure of Paul Gosar of Arizona for posting a video showing him murdering Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the President Joe Biden, McCarthy was visibly upset during his weekly press conference when a reporter asked him why Cheney was the only member of his conference who had suffered some form of punishment from fellow Republicans.

“Did you lose any committees? She lost an election, people run for election all the time, ”McCarthy said, even though Cheney’s impeachment on May 12 was the result of a voice vote at the insistence of the minority leader.

The California Republican then launched into a litany of complaints about House Democrats who he said were equivalent to Gosar.

He also complained about a 2019 incident in which the Democratic majority voted not to support a motion by then-Georgia Representative Doug Collins for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to “downgrade” or remove comments from the record. he had issued about racist tweets posted by Trump.

“It’s interesting to me how the Democrats want rules for you but not for me,” he observed. “That is not right and we will change it when we are in the majority.”
