Kevin/Marcus Remain World No. 1 Despite Losing at Denmark Open

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Indonesian men’s doubles Kevin Sanjaya/Marcus Gideon confirmed to remain the world’s number one pair despite losing in the round of 16 Denmark Open 2021, Thursday (21/10).

This certainty was obtained after the world number 3 men’s doubles from Taiwan, Lee Yang / Wang Chi Lin, also lost in the last 16 of the Denmark Open 2021. Lee / Wang, who are gold medalists at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, were defeated by Tokuro Hoki Yugo Kobayashi from Japan by 19 -21 and 17-21.

The result keeps Kevin/Marcus at the top of the BWF world rankings for men’s doubles. Kevin/Marcus will be confirmed to be the world’s number 1 men’s doubles at least until November 22, or before the 2021 Indonesia Open is held in Bali.

Indonesia’s men’s doubles, Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan, are also confirmed to maintain the world number 2 position until November 22 thanks to the defeat of Lee/Wang.

Ahsan/Hendra immediately lost in the first round of the Denmark Open 2021 after weighing 17-21 and 13-21 to Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Seidel from Germany. Meanwhile Kevin/Marcus were defeated by compatriots, Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana, in the round of 16.

The certainty of the positions of Kevin/Marcus and Ahsan/Hendra emerged after Lee/Wang were confirmed to be absent from the 2021 French Open which will take place next week at the Pierre de Coubertin Stadium.

Indonesia itself ensured that six representatives qualified for the quarter-finals of the Denmark Open 2021 which was held today, Friday (22/10), including the men’s doubles Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana.

While the men’s singles were represented by Jonatan Christie and Tommy Sugiarto, the women’s doubles were represented by Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu, and the mixed doubles was represented by Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti.
