Kevin Hart: Generous donation to schools

They all have a connection to the city: rapper Meek, 34, and actor Kevin, 42, grew up in North Philadelphia, while Fanatics CEO Michael, 49, co-owns local NBA team, the 76ers. All three have previously donated to educational institutions in the city and explained their mission. In 2019, Michael said, “We care about education. I don’t know if you guys saw it, Meek and I talked a lot about education. In fact, we’re going to be giving millions of dollars to schools in Pennsylvania this year.”

Kevin previously donated $250,000 to better technology in schools and $600,000 to college scholarship funds. In 2020, Meek and Michael also committed $2 million in scholarship funds amid the COVID-19 pandemic. William Hite, the district superintendent — an area where 65 percent of students are described as “economically disadvantaged” — warned Tuesday (Jan. 11) that they are incredibly short on funding, about $5,583 per student. “Philadelphia is the poorest city in the country. We have a larger number of young people who do not have access to early childhood education and who are not at their grade level, those experiencing trauma and homelessness, those who are new to the country, have special needs and those who need additional resources.”
