The victory moves California to 2-0 on the season, showcasing a strong defensive performance and the continued emergence of freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.
The game, the first-ever meeting between the two schools, saw californias defense limit Texas Southern to just 194 yards of offense and a single field goal in the fourth quarter. While Coach Justin Wilcox acknowledged areas for advancement, the defensive showing provides a solid foundation as the Bears prepare for a challenging upcoming schedule. sagapolutele, building on his notable debut against Oregon State, passed for 259 yards with one interception and added a 1-yard rushing touchdown.
Sagapolutele’s performance was complemented by a strong running game, highlighted by a 12-yard touchdown run from L.J. Johnson Jr.Abram Murray also contributed with a 44-yard field goal.
