Washington (CNN) — White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway announced Sunday night that she will be leaving her post at the end of the month, while her husband, George Conway, said he was retiring from Project Lincoln, both citing the need to focus on their family. .
“I will transition from the White House at the end of this month. George is also making changes, ”Kellyanne Conway said in a statement.
“We do not agree on many things, but we are united in what matters most: children. Our four children are teens and tweens starting a new academic year, in middle and high school, remotely from home for at least a few months. As millions of parents across the country know, children ‘taking classes from home’ requires a level of attention and vigilance that is as unusual as these times.
George Conway tweeted minutes before he was withdrawing from Project Lincoln, an anti-Trump Republican group, to “spend more time on family matters.”
Kellyanne Conway is scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention this week, but it’s unclear if she still will.
One of the Conway’s school-age daughters has drawn attention on social media about her family and her political views in recent months.
Sunday night’s announcement marks the abrupt end of Kellyanne Conway’s high-profile stint in the White House, where she earned a reputation as one of the president’s fiercest and most controversial advocates. She landed the position in 2016 after becoming the first female campaign manager to win a presidential race.
But the tension politics with her husband had come to light in recent years.
George Conway, a Washington attorney who was considered for various positions in the Department of Justice early in Trump, quickly emerged as a prominent critic of the president.
He previously said that Trump is “guilty” of unfit for office, called on Congress to remove Trump’s “cancer” from the presidency, and openly questioned the president’s mental health.
His opposition took on new meaning when he joined the Lincoln Project.
Each of the Lincoln Project directors had sided with the “NeverTrump” movement in the 2016 election and have been openly critical of Trump and the Republican Party ever since.
Trump himself scorned George Conway last year, labeling him “Mr. Kellyanne Conway »in a tweet.
Earlier Sunday, George Conway had said in a Twitter thread: “‘I may’ take a break from Twitter soon” before listing some of his opinion pieces critical of the president.
Still, Kellyanne Conway said in her statement Sunday that “the amazing men, women and children we have met along the way have reaffirmed my belated experience that public service can be meaningful and transcendent.”
“Despite all its political differences and cultural divisions, this is a beautiful country full of amazing people. The promise of U.S It belongs to all of us, ”Kellyanne Conway said.
He also emphasized that the decision “is completely my choice and my voice.”
In time, I will announce future plans. For now, and for my dear children, it will be less drama, more mom, “he said.
