Does plasma with antibodies against the coronavirus protect elderly patients from dreaded hospitalization? Professor Jaap Jan Zwaginga of the Leiden University Medical Center asks elderly people who have the virus just among their members to take part in a major study. Teams from the LUMC and Erasmus MC, together with the Sanquin blood bank, are investigating whether the administration of plasma from ex-corona patients leads to a faster recovery and fewer hospital admissions.

“Very relevant now that the hospitals are filling up and the care for our other patients is under pressure,” says Zwaginga, professor of ‘clinical transfusion medicine’. “We are investigating whether this plasma with antibodies means that patients who are at risk of a more serious course of corona are admitted less often. We also hope that the disease progresses less seriously. This is not only of great importance for the covid patient, but also for the rest of the care. ”
