‘Keeping schools closed for two weeks longer can really help’

The government should consider keeping schools closed for another two weeks. That says Jos van de Sande, former head of infectious disease control at the GGD Hart Voor Brabant. He thus joins an advice from the Red Team, a group of scientists who provide the cabinet with unsolicited advice on corona measures.

“If you can teach well online, I would keep the schools closed for a few more weeks. That can really help ”, says the doctor.

Although it was previously thought that children could not get the virus, there are now many more indications that schools in particular are super spreaders. A school in Lansingerland even closed at the end of November after 40 infections were among teachers, students and parents. This concerned the contagious British variant of the corona virus.

“There are a lot of contact moments at schools and it is very difficult to keep your distance,” says Van de Sande. “The more people are infected, the more difficult it becomes to contain those contagious variants. Then you have to take measures and that could be a longer school closure. ”
