Karro: I liked the first day’s rides the best, because I had to use my tactics

In the most prestigious class of the World Motocross Championship (MXGP) of the three stages of Latvia, the races of the first day of the competition went to the heart the most, because they managed to use tactical tricks unknown to the competitors, the Latvian motocross rider said. Matisse Carro.

It has already been reported that Latvia will be represented in Ķegums in three MXGP stages by motocross riders Matīss Karro and Kārlis Sabulis.

“I started the season with the idea that I would start in the Baltic races in Latvia and Estonia. Everything went pretty well, but thanks to the support of the MX Moduls team and the road construction company Binders, I was able to return to the MXGP race. explained Karro. “It takes a lot of funding and good equipment here.”

The cost of equipment (motorcycle) in competitions of this level can be written in at least five and sometimes even six digits, while Karro revealed that he managed to “run” under this bar. Of course, realizing that technology is far from being at the most competitive level.

“There have been pleasant memories from the MXGP stages in Latvia. Everything was successful and it worked out quickly. Fortunately, we did not have to fight and look for funding, as has been the case in previous years, so the decision was made to start,” said Apenietis.

Karro previously rode in the MXGP class in 2018, when he completed five of the 20 stages. Although this season was severely affected by the pandemic caused by Covid-19, the motocross rider knew that the competitors would not be sitting, arms folded. In previous years, the athlete himself has had to thoroughly injure his legs, especially his knees, so the tactic used in the past – running after each place – was not used this time.

“I knew that no one would sleep at home in the World Cup and wait for the virus to go away. Everyone would do their job,” Karro said. “It’s not easy, it’s not easy. The track in Ķegums is also very complicated. Previously, when I drove in teams and lived abroad, I was already used to such tracks, but we don’t have that type of track in the Baltics, so I can’t adapt so quickly.”

“There is anxiety, because something can be felt. Also last year, I was badly injured here. Sunday was the first stage in Latvia, but on Monday morning I already felt severe pain in the knee. Thanks to doctors and physiotherapists, I was able to continue to compete,” Karro said.

“You don’t have to think about injuries, then something will happen,” the athlete points to the power of smiles and good thoughts.

Carro also did not deny that there was a small dream of a particular place, but in order to achieve a recognizable result in the MXGP class, a strict regime must be followed day by day, and training must be conducted on high-level tracks abroad.

A very important circumstance helped in the stages in Latvia – no trainings were held in the competition, which is usually followed by qualification and two Grand Prix races the next day. Due to the situation created by Covid-19, the athletes completed both qualifying and both races in one day, but the trainings were not completed.

“Of course, it’s a dream to break into the twenties and get one point, but this time wisely and with my head,” Karro said in the stage of Kegums’ Grand Prix after the first trip. “It’s a big burden, but it’s good that everything happens in one day. It’s not that you get discharged on Saturday and then think about what to do on Sunday. I like that all trips take place in one day.”

In terms of previous trips, Karro liked the first ones the most, because they managed to take advantage of the home track. Later, these masters were decoded by other riders.

“I think after the first trips, everyone looked at the recordings and undoed my idea,” Carro said with a smile. “It had its own tactics. Qualification is important, then you can also try to drive on the outside.”

“I felt best on Wednesday, although I couldn’t understand what was happening to me in the first half of the day. Later, I gathered and had the pleasure of being able to ride in the same group with competitors. I was also in the top twenty, but at the end I was a little short,” Karro explained.

In the future, Latvia will probably be represented in the MXGP class by Kārlis Sabulis, who made his debut in Ķegums in the most prestigious motocross class. In turn, another surname between the two Latvians will certainly not be noticeable, because a full-fledged return to the elite movement is not in Karro’s plans.

“I can say no to that,” the athlete gave a clear answer about returning to the MXGP class. “I’ve been there for many years and I’ve had a lot of injuries. I’ve had a regimen, so I know what it takes. I remember when I spent my days training, eating, sleeping and doing extra work, but I went to bed for dozens. I also followed for food – I counted the calories. “

“It was also my best season in 2014. It’s a pleasant memory, but do I want to go back there? There were emotions, good results – pleasant. In life, time goes on and everything develops. Also, scramble,” admitted the motorcyclist.

“To do that, you have to have a good foundation at the bottom. You also have to find the motivation and willpower to do it yourself. I definitely don’t write off myself, but my body is pretty tired from injuries. I want to enjoy this sport right here at home,” Karro explained. that great emotions can also be obtained in Latvia and Estonia, where you can’t complain about fan support.

Karro achieved the highest result in the second race of Ķegums “Grand Prix” – 21st position. This trip also ended the week-long motocross marathon in Ķegums, where three stages of the world championship took place in a row.

Karro ranked 25th in the overall standings in Latvia in the first and third round, but in the second he ranked three positions lower and did not reach the test points.

Karro made his debut in the MXGP class in 2012. That year, the athlete did not participate in eight stages, but this did not prevent her from ranking 17th.

He finished the 2018 season, which was also the last in Karro MXGP class so far, in 44th place among 53 riders. The most successful season came in 2014, when the 13th position was won among 77 riders.

In the following years, Carro suffered several serious injuries, as a result of which the MXGP class did not start for three consecutive seasons (from 2015 to 2017).

Previously in his career, the athlete was crowned world junior champion in 2008.
