On February 19, the entire fashion industry mourned for fashion czar Karl Lagerfeld († 85). Chanel’s chief designer died in a Paris hospital. According to previous reports, the designer is said to have succumbed to the consequences of pancreatic cancer. Sebastien Jondeau (44), Lagerfeld’s personal assistant, now reveals in an interview with the French magazine «Paris Match» what Lagerfeld really died of.

The fashion designer was not suffering from pancreatic cancer, but from prostate cancer. He received the diagnosis in 2015. Lagerfeld had entrusted his assistant with his health problems. “I have a problem, I can’t pee,” he said to him at the time. A urine sample confirmed that it was cancer.

Not even his relatives knew about the diagnosis
«None of his relatives knew about it until his death. Karl suffered from prostate cancer. Not with pancreatic cancer, what everyone said after his death, »says Jondeau, who had worked for the fashion tsar for 20 years. He had never experienced Lagerfeld as worried and desperate as after the diagnosis. It was difficult to find suitable medical treatment. “Sometimes we got good news, sometimes bad news,” says Jondeau.
