Karius was recommended to Union by Klopp’s manager

German goalkeeper Loris Karius left Liverpool for a one-year guest appearance at Union Berlin, currently the ninth Bundesliga club. The 27-year-old goalkeeper will spend his third season hosting, having worked in Beşiktaşi Istanbul for the previous two years. An engagement in Berlin was recommended to Karius by Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp so that he could catch more often.

In Liverpool, Karius was the goalkeeper’s three and did not play for a minute in the new season. The contract is signed until June 2022.

“Jürgen told me it would be a good move and that I had a chance to excel here. I decided I wanted to be in the goal week after week,” Karius said today at a press conference. He also chose Berlin because his girlfriend lives there.

Karius became the number one Liverpool in 2016 after coming from Mainz, but he made two gross mistakes in the final of the Champions League against Real Madrid (1: 3). And when Brazilian number one goalkeeper Alisson Becker headed to the club, Karius decided to leave for Beşiktaş.

This summer, it was said that he would be satisfied with the role of number two in Liverpool. However, the Spaniard Adrián remained, so Karius decided to leave again. “Overall, some things about me here in Germany have been rated too negatively, but I won’t do anything about it. I’ve been gone for four years and my goal is to show that I’m a really good Bundesliga goalkeeper.” added Karius.
