Karachi - The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) announced Friday the uncovering of a significant customs fraud at Karachi airport involving the evasion of approximately Rs384 million in duties and taxes.
the FBR stated that five consignments from a Dubai-registered company were cleared using fraudulent gate passes and concealed within the Web-Based One Customs (WeBOC) system. Authorities seized a consignment worth Rs103 million, including laptops, iPads, iPhones, MacBooks, PlayStations, and memory cards, as part of the investigation.
“Two first facts reports (FIRs) have been lodged, employees arrested, and further arrests are expected,” the FBR said in a statement.
The operation underscores the FBR’s ”commitment to safeguarding national revenue,” with a warning that negligent customs officials will face consequences. This action follows a recent intensification of the FBR’s crackdown on tax evasion and smuggling at ports and airports nationwide.
Last month, the revenue watchdog launched a “Lifestyle Monitoring Cell” comprised of 40 investigators tasked with identifying potential tax evasion thru social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
