Kapsch TrafficCom brings “Made in Austria” technology to Norwegian roads – press releases

Vienna/Oslo, 14 November 2022 – A pilot project by Kapsch TrafficCom and Aventi Intelligent Communication enables a completely new type of toll collection for passenger cars.

The Austrian IT company Kapsch TrafficCom, together with its partner company Aventi Intelligent Communication, tested the toll system of the future in a pilot project in Norway. Specifically, the goal is to find out how passenger cars can be charged based on the vehicle’s emissions status, distance traveled, and vehicle type.

The project complies with all relevant data protection guidelines and only collects the data necessary to process the trip. “In total, more than two million kilometers of travel were analysed, which is equivalent to about 50 orbits around the world. The system was able to deal with the difficult and very specific conditions of the Norwegian road network, matching routes and calculating fares with more than 99% accuracy.”said Alfredo Escriba, Chief Technical Officer of Kapsch TrafficCom.

Fair and easy to use system

The project is part of the ‘concept selection study’ commissioned by the Norwegian authorities with the aim of finding new ways to set and collect road user charges in the future. The background is the rapidly declining vehicle tax revenues, in particular due to the high proportion of electric vehicles in Norway. A problem that more and more countries will have to face in the future.

On the one hand, usage-based pricing can compensate for the fiscal deficit of states and, on the other hand, it offers a fair and transparent pricing system for road users. While this type of toll collection for trucks is already established, the tested system could offer a practical and easy-to-use tool for cars for the first time.
