Kaag: it is impossible that Chamber of Commerce rejects CETA

It is “impossible” that the European trade agreement with Canada is not approved by the House of Representatives today. Minister Kaag said this before the start of the CETA debate. “That would be a disgrace for the Netherlands.”

The CETA debate has just begun. The question is still whether a majority supports it. Only VVD, CDA and D66 are clearly in favor.

The PvdA withdrew support in October last year because, according to party leader Asscher, fair labor, environment and animal welfare are not properly regulated in the treaty. This is a setback for the government because in the previous cabinet the then PvdA minister Ploumen, now a member of parliament, was working for CETA.

At the start of the debate, D66 leader Jetten asked why PvdA MP Van den Hul spoke today. “It would be good for Mr Asscher and Mrs Ploumen to participate in this debate.” His request to invite the two PvdA members still received little support.
