Justice. Cassandra case: word in defense of the torturers of Verdun

Pronounced Thursday at the end of the afternoon, the requisitions of the public prosecutor in the Cassandra case were severe. Referred to the Assize Court of Meurthe-et-Moselle, in 2019, for kidnapping, rape, acts of torture and barbarism on the vulnerable person that is Cassandra because of her slight mental disability, in the first instance the six defendants had been sentenced to terms ranging from 7 to 18 years of criminal imprisonment. Judging the quantum of the penalty too low for three of them, the Attorney General of Nancy had therefore appealed for Laetitia Dupont, Manuel Pasquereau and Caroline Denisart, respectively sentenced, to: 18 years for the first two and 15 years of criminal imprisonment for the last.

No one was therefore surprised when, on Thursday, Jean-Yves Goueffon, the attorney general at the Moselle Assize Court where “the infernal trio” has been tried since November 4, as he called them, took severe requisitions, going well beyond the sentences handed down in Nancy, in 2019. Believing that they had “all three transgressed the most absolute social taboo: respect for the physical integrity of the human personality”, the ministry public required 15 years against Caroline Denisart and 30 years of criminal imprisonment against Laetitia Dupont and Manuel Pasquereau. In the box, when the requisitions were announced, the defendants held their heads in their hands, looking down in despair. It remains to be seen whether the Assize Court, chaired by Anne Cazals and composed of two other professional magistrates as well as nine jurors (and not six as in first instance) will follow them.

Before deliberation, the pleadings of the three defense lawyers are expected this Friday morning: Me Caroline Rumbach for Caroline Denisart, Me Xavier Nodee for Manuel Pasquereau and Me Etienne Mangeot for Laetitia Dupont. Case to follow today on our site.
