Just left by Van Dijk, Liverpool threatened to lose another defender

KOMPAS.com – The hurricane of injury has not stopped hitting the defending champions’ squad Premier League, Liverpool.

The latest, the Liverpool center-back, Joel Matip, reportedly suffered a leg muscle injury, Monday (19/10/2020).

The news broke the day after Virgil van Dijk confirmed to go up the operating table because of knee ligament injury or so-called anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

According to The Athletic reporter, James Pearce, Joel Matip began to feel a muscle injury after playing in the Everton vs Liverpool match on Saturday (17/10/2020).

James Pearce said Joel Matip in the near future will undergo further tests to confirm his injury.

“Joel Matip immediately took a scan after complaining of his leg muscles after the match against Everton,” said James Pearce.

“Although there are no signs of serious injury, Joel Matip will carry out further tests,” added James Pearce.

After this news broke, Joel Matip was caught on camera in a hospital in Liverpool.

The match against Everton was at the center of the hurricane of injuries that hit Liverpool at this time.

Van Dijk got an ACL injury after his leg was hit by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the sixth minute of the match.

Quoted from the Mirror site, Van Dijk is predicted to be absent for six months to one year after undergoing surgery.

The reason is, Van Dijk suffered a level three ACL injury, the worst level of the ligament problem.

A level three ACL injury can take a long time to recover because the ligament structure of the knee is damaged.

Regarding Van Dijk’s recovery time, Liverpool has yet to provide clarity.

Apart from Van Dijk and Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara is another Liverpool player who reportedly also suffered an injury following the match against Everton.

Losing Van Dijk plus Joel Matip’s unstable condition is certainly not good news for Liverpool.

The reason is, Van Dijk and Joel Matip are the two most senior center-backs Liverpool currently have.

If Joel Matip is really injured, Liverpool’s stock of pure senior center-back is only one, namely, Joe Gomez.

The situation at Liverpool’s back line is getting worse because the main goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, will only recover in mid-November 2020.

Alisson Becker previously injured his shoulder during training in early October 2020.

That means Liverpool will likely appear without two senior defenders and goalkeepers when undergoing a busy schedule in the near future.

Some of the tough opponents Liverpool will face until November 2020 are Ajax Amsterdam, Atalanta and Manchester City.
