Just continue driving with an expired driving license Inland

In principle, the scheme applies until 1 June, but if the situation requires it, it can be extended at any time. It is clear that the police will not act against expired driving licenses and turn a blind eye if the document is not renewed in time. The insurers also agree to the scheme.

“Validity expires for a substantial number of driving licenses. For some of the driving license holders it is relatively easy to apply for a new driving license from the municipality. This is not always possible for people who have symptoms or live in a house with someone who has symptoms ”, says Van Nieuwenhuizen.

The scheme is only available for driving licenses with a validity of ten years. People whose driving licenses are valid for a shorter period are not covered by the measure. The “pink card” of these people needs to be renewed more often because of a medical condition. This group should be regularly evaluated by a physician. “That is important with regard to road safety.”

“We wholeheartedly support the scheme and see it as a binding decision,” says Oscar van Elferen of the Dutch Association of Insurers. ,, It is not, as with the leniency scheme for people over 75, a non-binding advice. This means that all drivers who go on the road with an expired driving license do not have to worry whether or not they are insured if something happens to them. ”

All major car insurers, with the exception of the PhD student, are members of the Dutch Association of Insurers. “But we will also approach them if they want to join this scheme,” says Van Elferen, who emphasizes that the expiry of the document must have been demonstrably caused by the corona crisis.

Van Nieuwenhuizen also wants to make it possible to send and deliver a driving license under certain conditions. “At the moment, municipalities are not allowed to do that. So people have to go to the municipality to collect their driving license. I understand the consideration of municipalities in these days to choose to deliver the document anyway. This limits contact moments between employees and residents. ”
