Judge Refuses to Pay Toll, Finally Gives Up After Debating with Officers

Jakarta

Using the position to get privileges has happened a lot in India. What recently happened, a judge refused to pay when he was about to enter Highway. Too!

The video of the judge refusing to pay when he was about to enter toll booths was widely circulated via Twitter in India. It happened last week, at the entrance to the Toll Plaza, which is located between Bareilly and Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Quoted from Cartoq, the video is the result of a CCTV camera recording. While the audio is obtained from recordings via cellphone.

The video shows a white Maruti Suzuki Ertiga car stopping at the toll booth. As soon as they stop, the passenger of the car immediately shows his identity card as a judge to the box where the toll gate guard is located.

The toll gatekeeper then answered that he did not have the authority to give privileges to eliminate toll fees. The clerk then called his supervisor.

After the supervisor checked the passenger’s ID, an argument broke out. The conclusion is still the same, the judge and his car cannot pass through the toll booth without paying.

The argument between them did not end there. The supervisor then calls his manager to solve the problem. To the manager, the judge again asked him to be allowed to pass without pay. He claimed that with the position he had, namely as an Additional District Judge (ADJ), he should have been able to pass the toll road without paying.

The judge also argued that on his way to the toll gate he had already passed several other toll roads. And everything he can get through without paying.

However, the toll road manager is adamant in his stance. He still asked the judge to pay toll rates amounting to Rs 80 (equivalent to IDR 15,900). The manager also emphasized that only judges from the high court and the supreme court were free from the obligation to pay tolls.

This incident certainly caused a long queue of vehicles. When asked about the queue behind him, the judge denied that it was because of him.

The debate at the toll booth ended shortly thereafter. The judge was willing to pay the toll fee and was finally allowed to pass.

Still quoted from Cartoq, this kind of incident often occurs in India. To note, some public officials in India have the privilege of crossing toll roads for free. Which officials can ride tolls for free are written on a large board at the toll entrance.

Those who hold a position with this privilege will ask that they be allowed to pass free of charge at toll booths. However, it turns out that there are those who try to get the facility even though they are not actually on the list of exceptions.
