Journalists and media makers start reporting to Racism and Discrimination

A group of more than 300 journalists, presenters and media makers has joined in one manifest announced to establish a hotline for racism and discrimination in the media. The initiators want to register reports of racism and discrimination in journalistic media companies and media productions and take action against companies that are guilty of this, consciously or unconsciously.

In addition, the group wants companies to conduct more research into racism and discrimination in the workplace and to combat this more actively. They also want more editors-in-chief, presenters and chief editors of color.

It is not yet clear from which date the reporting center will become active.

Stereotype

The manifesto states that the Black Lives Matter movement has awakened many about institutional racism and exclusion in different parts of society. “As experienced and committed media makers of color and allies of solidarity, we make an indictment in this statement against the exclusive mechanisms that are also present in the Dutch media.”

The group also writes that images and media reports “are often stereotyped towards people of color and other marginalized groups”. According to the initiators, the Media Reporting Center for Racism & Discrimination for journalists and media makers must become a safe environment for victims and whistleblowers where they are also assisted psychologically and legally.

The media makers collaborate with the Dutch Association of Journalists and the RADAR foundation in establishing the reporting center.
