The “Radio Play of the Year 2019” comes from Josef Winkler. The author was honored for his text “Let yourself go home, father, or write death to my heart” on Friday evening in the RadioKulturHaus. He was able to prevail against 26 new productions in the public selection. The critics’ award went to Ruth Johanna Benrath, Johannes Silberschneider was named “Actor of the Year”.
In “Let yourself go home, father, or write death to my heart”, Josef Winkler, born in Camering in Carinthia in 1953, asked his late father a question above all: “Why did you keep silent, why did you keep it quiet… on which floor we stand?”. It was only late, after the father’s death, that Winkler found out that the body of Odilo Globocnik had been buried on the Sautratten, the field of the village where the grain for the family’s daily bread was grown.
Globocnik was the organizer and head of “Aktion Reinhardt”, he was largely responsible for the murder of more than one and a half million people in the extermination camps Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka between March 1942 and August 1943 and proud of it until the end. Winkler wrote the text for the Vienna Burgtheater in 2017, the radio play director Alice Elstner edited and directed Winkler’s text for Ö1, with Johannes Silberschneider in the leading role and Oskar Kisela as a child. Christoph Theiler composed the music.
The “Radio Play of the Year” will be broadcast again on February 29 at 2 p.m. in Ö1. “GO TIGHTLY SEALED! Listening dialogue with Elfriede Gerstl ”by Ruth Johanna Benrath will be repeated on“ Ö1 Kunstsonntag ”on March 1st at 11pm. The winning projects were also presented by “Track 5”, the Ö1 competition for short radio plays advertised in cooperation with the “school for poetry”. These will be broadcast on March 7th in the “Ö1 radio play” (2 pm).
