Jordan and Hamas May Reconcile Soon to Face Israel

AMMANJordan and Hamas may be on the verge of reconciliation in the ongoing confrontation with Israel .

This was evident during the latest Israeli attacks against Palestinians in Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, Jordan expressed his desire to defend the Palestinian people.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi emphasized this during a press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, in Amman in May.

The Hashemite government of Jordan according to Safadi has been in touch with Hamas on the issue.

King Abdullah of Jordan said a few days ago that there may be a “conspiracy” against Jordan and Palestine to neutralize the role of the Kingdom of Jordan in what Jordanians see as an integral part of their identity.

Apart from their common border, Jordan and Palestine are linked by the fact that most of Jordan’s population is of Palestinian origin.

In addition, about two million Palestinian refugees live in ten UN camps in Jordan.

“The circumstances that prevented the Jordanian government and Hamas from communicating no longer exist because the aggression against Gaza imposes new facts on the ground, which necessitate turning a new page with the movement,” said Ahmed Said Nofal, an expert on Palestinian and Israeli affairs.

Political science professor Ahmed Said Nofal attributes this development to the fact that Hamas represents people on the street because of its defense of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Shrine in the Old City.

Officially, Al-Aqsa is under the guardianship of Jordan. By defending the holy place from Israel’s desecration of it, Hamas is essentially supporting the Kingdom of Jordan in its role.

Jordan’s Ministry of Religious Endowments has responsibility for the holy sites in Jerusalem, a position that was not changed by the Israeli occupation in 1967.

“The Jordanian government is aware that Hamas enjoys great popularity, especially because of the movement’s resistance to Israeli aggression, which means it is convenient for Jordan to rebuild those relations,” Nofal said.

“If the Palestinian presidential and legislative elections take place, there is a strong belief that Hamas will win,” he said.

He added, “Having relationships with those who can control the situation on the ground will be important for Jordan.”

“Powerful countries, including Europe and the US, have started discussing possible relations with Hamas, which requires Jordan to be proactive, given its historical ties to the Palestinian cause,” he concluded.
