In Peru, the process of extradition of Joran van der Sloot to the United States has started, reports CNN. The 35-year-old Van der Sloot was moved this morning from the maximum security prison in the south of the country to a prison in the capital Lima.

A CNN source reports that Van der Sloot will probably be flown to the US on Friday. He has been charged with extortion of Natalee Holloway’s family.

That 18-year-old American student went missing in Aruba in 2005. She was last seen with Van der Sloot leaving a bar. Her body was never found and the Dutchman was not prosecuted.

Returned to Peru after court case

US prosecutors want to prosecute Van der Sloot because he asked the relatives $ 250,000 in exchange for information about the location of Holloway’s body. He later admitted that those were false promises. He could be sentenced to 25 years in prison for extortion in the United States.

He is supposed to return to Peru after the case to serve out the rest of his sentence. Van der Sloot is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence in Peru for another case: the murder of 21-year-old Peruvian student Stephany Flores. That murder happened five years after Holloway’s disappearance.
