Joost (30) from Halsteren died in a surf drama in Scheveningen

One of the five surfers who died on Monday off the coast of Scheveningen is 30-year-old Joost Bakker from Halsteren. That writes Stichting Huis aan het Water on its Facebook page. A few times, Joost raised money for this foundation that supports cancer patients.

The Dutch surf world has reacted with great dismay to the deaths of the five body and wave surfers. Joost was one of them. After high school he moved to The Hague for surfing, where he gave surf lessons and coached top surfers. The surfer had just turned 30.

In 2013 Joost raised 7000 euros for Huis aan het Water by cycling to Gibraltar with a friend from the North Cape.

A video of this promotion was made at the time:

After this sponsor action, Joost climbed Mont Ventoux in 2014 together with other go-getters for Huis aan het Water.

“We are very grateful to Joost for what he did then and are extremely sad that such a beautiful person died so much too young,” can be read on Facebook.

Huge epicurean
“Joost was a bon vivant, super social, cheerfully sporty and loved his freedom. His passion and his job was surfing and unfortunately that also killed him. ”

The five surfers were all at home at surf school The Shore. “You can think of The Shore as the living room of all surf teachers,” a surf school employee told the NOS. In front of the building of the surf school there are many bunches of flowers and a memorial has been hung: a black board with five white fish on it.
