“Jonas has taken a big step in his personal development over the past two years and has earned a permanent spot in the BBL squad. This step is the logical consequence and at the same time the reward for his hard work,” said Würzburg head coach Denis Wucherer.
Steady upward trend
Weitzel moved from Göttingen to the Main in summer 2017. In the first year he played with a double license in the youth league NBBL and the ProB, in the 2018/2019 season he then developed into the top performer of the farm team and was in the playdown round with 16.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game significantly involved in the relegation of the TG s.Oliver Würzburg. In the 2019/2020 season, the 2.05-meter center was not only part of s.Oliver Würzburg’s expanded Bundesliga squad, but with 17 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, it was one of the three best young German players in ProB, from which Würzburg recently canceled their team.
