Jon Batiste wins the most Grammys

With five figurines for jazz singer and pianist Jon Batiste, the 64th Grammy Awards had a striking protagonist. Silk Sonic and Olivia Rodrigo also took top prizes.

The Grammys were awarded for the 64th time on Sunday evening with a grand show in Las Vegas. With this award, the American Recording Academy awards the best music of the past year, in no fewer than 86 categories. There are some decent niche awards in between, including ‘Best Album Notes’ and ‘Best Contemporary Christian Music Album’ (for the fans: these went to Ricky Riccardi and Elevation Worship & Maverick City Music respectively). But the four most important cross-genre awards are ‘Album of the year’, ‘Record of the year’, ‘Song of the year’ and ‘Best new artist’.

That made the 19-year-old pop singer Olivia Rodrigo the top favorite, because she was the only one nominated in those four categories. Despite the success of world hit Driver’s license and her debut album Sour she only managed to win in the newbies category. Earlier in the evening she already won two prizes in the pop category.

Silk Sonic, the occasional project of R&B and pop stars Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars, won for ‘Record of the year’ (which mainly rewards the recording) and ‘Song of the year’ (which rather celebrates the writing). Their Leave the door open also won two R&B awards. That is called scoring at one hundred percent, because An evening with Silk Sonicthe album where Leave the door open on state, was only released after the nomination deadline of September 30, 2021.

Black Lives Matter-beweging

The big winner of the evening was a name less known in our regions. Jazz musician Jon Batiste won ‘Album of the year’ for his eighth album We are, and beat the likes of Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift. Compared to that We are anything but a commercial mega success, but just like the Oscar Academy, the Recording Academy sometimes mainly opts for excellent performances of long traditions.

The record digs richly into the musical traditions of black America, with a classy mix of jazz, soul, hip-hop and pop. Lyrically, the themes of the Black Lives Matter movement play a role – in 2020 Batist himself led one such protest march, when he marched through the streets of New York with a band of brass players and 5,000 protesters in tow.

Before the awards were presented, Batiste was already the favorite with 11 nominations in total. He won five of those, and also two awards in the ‘American Roots’ category, ‘Best Music Video’ for Freedom and ‘Best Soundtrack’ for the Pixar movie Soul† He also won an Oscar in 2021.

Hawkins and Zelenski

The Grammys also made room for an emotional goodbye to Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died suddenly in March at the age of 50 during a tour. During a video montage, the Foo Fighters song played My hero, which frontman Dave Grohl once wrote for his bandmate and friend Kurt Cobain, who also died too early. The band also won three awards in the ‘Rock’ category, but was not there to receive those gramophone statuettes.

Present – albeit via a video message – was Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky. It drew attention to “the silence of destroyed cities and killed people,” and asked those in attendance at the Grammys to “fill the horrific silence of death with music” and express their support for the Ukrainian people.
