Jokowi Targets 2 Million Electric Motors to Pave, Wants Indonesia to Become King of Electric Vehicle Manufacturers

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officially launched Ecosystem Development Collaboration Electric Vehicle between SOEs and the private sector. Consist of PertaminaGesits, gojekTBS Energi Utama, Electrum, as well as Gogoroa technology company from Taiwan.

He said the government was very serious in developing new and renewable energy (EBT) in Indonesia, including in providing ecosystems electric vehicle from upstream industry to downstream.

This is to achieve the government’s target for Indonesia to reduce emissions by 29 percent in 2030 and achieve the target of zero emissions or net zero emissions by 2060.

“So, supported by an electric vehicle ecosystem from upstream to downstream, it is hoped that the Indonesian state will truly be able to dominate as a producer of electric vehicles,” said Jokowi at the Inauguration of the Collaborative Development of the Electric Vehicle Ecosystem, Tuesday (22/2/2022).

The former governor of DKI Jakarta is targeting that there are at least 2 million electric vehicles in Indonesia that people can use for their daily activities.

He also wants, in the future, RI will not only become a producer but also an exporter of electric vehicles.

“We are also targeting that in 2025 there will be 2 million electric vehicles that can be used by the people of Indonesia, and then we will go to export markets,” he added.

Jokowi also appreciated the efforts made by industry players to build a good electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia.

He hopes that in the future the electric vehicle battery can be further developed with a larger power capacity.

Gesits, a child of WIKA production

Meanwhile, for electric motors, Indonesia itself has been able to produce them. One of them is Gesits, a production from Wika Industri Manufaktur, a subsidiary of PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk whose production capacity is expected to increase.

“There is already a Gesits whose production capacity will also be increased, perhaps in collaboration with a company from Taiwan Gogoro, for example, so that the electric vehicle ecosystem is truly built and ready to compete with other countries,” he explained.

On that occasion, Jokowi also had time to see how the process of replacing the battery or battery swapping on electric motors. According to him, the process of replacing the battery is practical and does not take long for motorists.

“I think this kind of management process is what vehicle users want. It will attract everyone’s interest to get into electric vehicles because they are cheaper and most importantly do not cause pollution,” he concluded.
