Jokowi asks that the police’s authority be maintained

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized that the law must be enforced indiscriminately. Firmness must be exercised against anyone who violates the law and commits crimes against the state and society.

“I often say, yes, firmness must bite anyone who is proven to have committed crimes against the state, as well as the community,” said Jokowi at the 2021 Head of Regional Units briefing in Badung Regency, Bali, through the channel. Youtube Presidential Secretariat, Friday (3/12).

Furthermore, Jokowi also requested that the police continue to maintain firmness and authority within the Police. He warned that the police officers should not pawn their authority, for example by conducting sowan to the elders of mass organizations who often violate the law.

“I’ve been meaning to tell you for a long time Kapolda Recently, there was a new Police Chief, instead he came to the elders of mass organizations who often made a fuss. Is this true?,” he said.

When Jokowi asked the Kapolda or Kapolres who visited the elders of mass organizations, this was done to keep the area conducive.

“But is that the right way? Be careful not to pawn authority with sowan to lawbreakers. I have seen a lot of this. Brothers and sisters must have authority, the Police must have authority,” he continued.

In addition, Jokowi said, Indonesia is a democratic country so it is open to criticism directed at the government. Therefore, he asked every element of the police to respect the freedom of expression of the people.

Criticisms conveyed by the public through any media, including murals, must also be responded to with a persuasive and dialogical approach.

“Criticism is called, criticism is called. If it disturbs order, yes, please, but if not, don’t, because we have declared this a democratic country. Respect freedom of opinion and absorb its aspirations,” he added.

The President also ordered the Police to protect and assist the weak who are marginalized by law. Small communities such as small traders should get attention.

“Small things like that, maybe it’s not the police chief or the police chief, but be careful it’s still the police chief’s responsibility, it’s still the small police chief’s responsibility. Especially if you’ve been labeled as discriminatory against the weak, be careful,” he insisted.

In this event, the President was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces General Andika Perkasa, and National Police Chief General Pol. Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
