Jokowi Rejects Lockdown, Breaks 15 Thousand Records

Suggestion lockdown in the midst of soaring cases Covid-19 in Indonesia burst from various circles of society in the past week. Nevertheless, President Joko Widodo ensure that lockdown is not enforced in Indonesia but remains on the Implementation of Micro Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM).

As for today, the addition of positive confirmed cases of Covid-19 set a new record of more than 15,000 cases.

In the midst of soaring cases of covid-19, mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus began to be detected in Indonesia. The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has succeeded in identifying 212 variants that fall into the ‘Variant of Concern (VoC) category, aka variants that the world is wary of.

Some people who have received the Covid-19 vaccine are also still exposed, some still end up dying. The government then emphasized that vaccines are a preventive measure, not preventing 100 percent of people from being exposed to COVID-19.

Covid-19 RI Sets New Record

Daily data released by the Covid-19 Handling Task Force as of today, Wednesday (23/6) noted that there were 15,308 new COVID-19 cases added. Meanwhile, for recovered cases, there were an additional 7,167 cases, and 303 new cases died.

So that cumulatively, as many as 2,033,421 people have tested positive for the corona virus. Of that number, 1,817,303 people have recovered, 160,524 are undergoing treatment in hospital and self-isolation, while 55,594 others have died.

Jokowi Rejects Lockdown

President Jokowi stated that the government would still decide to implement micro PPKM instead of a lockdown to control COVID-19 cases. Jokowi assessed that micro PPKM is the most appropriate policy because it will not kill the people’s economy.

He then instructed all regional heads, both governors, regents, and mayors to strengthen commitments in handling COVID-19. Jokowi asked regional heads to sharpen the implementation of Micro PPKM in their respective regions.

Delta Variant Extends

The Ministry of Health recorded positive cases of the Delta variant in Indonesia reaching 160 cases. The total cases were detected from the whole genome sequencing (WGS) process as of June 20, 2021.

This number has increased significantly from the previous one. On June 6, 2021, the Ministry of Health recorded the number of Delta variants in as many as 31 cases and spread across five provinces.

Overall, so far there have been 211 cases of mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus classified as VoC that have been identified in Indonesia. The details are 45 alpha variants, 6 beta variants, and 160 delta variants.
