Jokowi Rejected, Why Does The Discourse on Extending the President’s Term Keep Rolling? page all

KOMPAS.com – Recently, talk about extension the term of the presidency strengthened again.

This started when the General Chairman (Ketum) of the National Awakening Party (PKB) Muhaimin Iskandar hoped that the 2024 General Election (Pemilu) would be postponed.

The reason is so as not to disrupt economic stability, which is said to be improving that year.

According to him, the 2024 elections should be postponed for two years.

This statement was later reinforced by two other party leaders, namely the chairman of the Golkar Party, Airlangga Hartarto and the chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN) Zulkifli Hasan.

This discussion certainly strengthens the discourse on extending the presidential term that had previously surfaced.

However, President Joko Widodo has repeatedly rejected the discourse.

Jokowi emphasized that he did not agree with the suggestion that the president’s term of office be extended to three terms.

He also suspected that there were parties who proposed the discourse, deliberately to overthrow it.

Even though Jokowi has repeatedly refused, why does the discourse of extending the presidential term continue to roll on?

Political observer response

Paramadina University political observer Hendri Sastrio assesses that there are several possibilities that the discourse will continue to emerge.

According to him, a number of party leaders may be joking to please Jokowi.

“First of all, I’m just joking, a number of general leaders, joking around to make Jokowi happy and making jokes with the people, but it’s not funny anymore,” said Hendri to Kompas.com, Sunday (27/2/2022).

In addition, Hendri said that a number of party leaders were also afraid that their electability would drop in 2024.

The last possibility is the allegation of someone who ordered the passage of the discourse.

Apart from that, Hendri appealed that the public did not need to respond to the proposals of a number of political party leaders.

This is because the discourse destroys democracy in Indonesia.

He said that postponing the 2024 election or extending the term of office of the president is the same as coupling the General Elections Commission (KPU).

“The KPU is the institution that has the authority to determine and organize elections, the KPU has already decided on February 14, 2024,” he explained.

“Now some of the leaders of these political parties are trying to destabilize this,” he added.

Therefore, he appreciates, a number of parties that are not affected by this discourse, such as PDI-P, PKS, Nasdem Party, Democrat Party, PPP, and Gerindra Party.

When the discourse on postponing the 2024 general election rolled around, said Hendri, a number of party leaders must also have the courage to bear further consequences.

For example, if there are community groups who propose an accelerated election, then they must be treated the same.

“If they can propose a postponement of the election, of course they have to respect that if there are people who propose an accelerated election, the treatment must be the same,” he said.

“No one should be deemed to have violated, in the name of democracy. So if there is a proposal for a postponement, it should also be appreciated if there is a proposal to accelerate the election,” he concluded.
