Bulog President Director Budi Waseso or who is familiarly called Buwas opened his voice about President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) warning. Bulog was reprimanded for not being able to resell rice that had been absorbed from farmers.
He said that according to the rules, Bulog was required and assigned to absorb rice from farmers as the government’s rice reserve (CBP). The problem is that so far the rules for distributing CBP rice are very strict.
“Mr. President conveyed that Bulog can absorb but cannot sell. CBP is indeed full of provisions and regulations because goods are from the government, this is an assignment from the government,” said Buwas in a working meeting with Commission IV DPR, Monday (27/6/2022).
Buwas was asked by one of the members whether CBP rice could not be exported. Well, according to Buwas, regulation is again a problem.
He said that in 2019 his party had a contract with Saudi Arabia to export 100 thousand tons of rice. Everything is ready and will be dispatched. However, it failed again because there is a rule that prohibits Bulog from selling CBP.
“We have tried to use the excess absorption for export, if I’m not mistaken, in 2019 we contracted with Saudi Arabia for 100 thousand tons for 1 year. We have prepared it, we are about to depart. The problem is the rules again, regulations,” said Buwas.
“There is a rule that Bulog cannot export rice, there is a provision at the Ministry of Trade that the regulation cannot be violated,” he said.
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) previously asked all parties, from farmers to state-owned enterprises to increase national rice production. One food need is very important in the midst of the threat of a global crisis.
Jokowi also asked for the absorption to be carried out properly and there must be a serious takeover to buy farmers’ rice so that they are able to sell it to the public. In this case, he quipped Perum Bulog which was considered unable to sell until the quality of the rice decreased.
“If you have taken it, don’t let it be like Bulog, take from farmers a lot, stock cannot be sold, so the quality will go down and some are rotten, damaged, don’t,” said Jokowi during the Plenary Cabinet Session at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Monday (20/20). /6/2022) ago.
