Jokowi Asks Staff to Beware of Covid-19 Your Variant Enters Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) asked his ministers to be aware of the Covid-19 variant B1621 or variant Mu. Jokowi warned ministers so that the Mu variant of the corona virus did not enter Indonesia.

“I also want all of our attention to be related to transportation, Mr. Menhub, which is related to the new variant, the Mu variant. We really need to be more vigilant and detailed,” said Jokowi while chairing a limited meeting on PPKM Evaluation as shown on the Presidential Secretariat Youtube, Monday. (6/9).

According to him, the daily cases of Covid-19 in Indonesia have decreased compared to the beginning of July 2021 which reached 56,000 cases. In addition, the bed occupancy rate (BOR) of the Covid-19 Referral Hospital is now at 19 percent.

“I saw that if I looked at the daily cases for the past three days, for example, 7,700, 6,700 and 5,400 last yesterday. I saw that our national BOR was 21 (percent) three days ago, down 20 (percent), then now at 19 (percent), ” said Jokowi.

Jokowi said the BOR of Covid-19 patients at Wisma Atlet had also decreased to 9 percent. In addition, he said that the active case of Covid-19 in Indonesia currently stands at 150,000.

He believes that active Covid-19 cases could drop to 100,000 by the end of September 2021. Therefore, Jokowi does not want the Mu variant to enter Indonesia and cause Covid-19 cases to rise again.

“Don’t let this (Mu variant) damage the achievements we have made,” said Jokowi.

Previously, the Varian Mu coronavirus, also known as B.1.621, was added to the World Health Organization (WHO) watch list on August 30, 2021, after being detected in 39 countries.

The Mu variant is also said to have a group of mutations that may make it less susceptible to the immune protection that many people have acquired.

According to the WHO’s weekly bulletin on the pandemic, the Mu variant ‘has a constellation of mutations that exhibit potential immune escaping properties’. The report’s preliminary data suggest it may evade immune defenses in a similar way to the Beta variant first discovered in South Africa.

The Ministry of Health noted that Varian Mu has not been detected in the ASEAN region, including in Indonesia. This can be seen from the results of the detection of the Corona virus variant, Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS), which Indonesia continues to research.

Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Dante Saksono Harbuwono explained that Varian Mu was first detected in Colombia. It is known from laboratory analysis, Varian Mu affects the effectiveness of other Covid-19 vaccines and its spread is not as great as Variant Delta.

“One of the mutations besides the Delta variant, (appears) there is only Mu variant now. This variant occurred (detected) in Colombia,” said Dante during the PPKM Press Conference on Monday, September 6, 2021.

“Based on this week’s concern, seen in the laboratory, this variant has resistance to vaccine conditions. But the spread is not as great as the transmission from the Delta variant,” he continued.
