British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Saturday that a quarantine would be introduced in the country for four weeks from Thursday to curb the spread of the new coronavirus.
During this time, only shops for daily necessities will be open, entertainment and leisure facilities will be closed, and pubs, bars and restaurants will be able to offer meals only to take away or deliver them home. In turn, schools and higher education institutions will continue to work.
“It’s time to act, because there is no choice,” Johnson said in a televised address from Downing Street.
According to him, “the virus is spreading faster than the worst predictions of our scientific advisers.”
The total number of confirmed infections in the UK exceeded one million on Saturday, and almost 22,000 new cases were registered last day.
In terms of morbidity rates, Britain lags behind France and Spain, and mortality from the virus caused by the virus in Covid-19 is the highest in Europe, claiming more than 45,000 lives since the start of the pandemic.
“Christmas will be different this year, maybe even very differently, but I sincerely hope and believe that with decisive action we will be able to ensure that families across the country can be together,” the prime minister added.
