Chapman shot Lennon four times outside in 1980 at Lenon’s apartment in Manhattan, New York, in front of the shocked Yoko Ono.

In August this year, Chapman was denied early release for the eleventh time. During the court hearing, Chapman said that he had killed a 40-year-old rock star for fame and deserved the death penalty. He found that he was constantly thinking about his “miserable actions” and was aware that he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

“I want to reiterate my regret at my crime,” Chapman revealed at the hearing. “I have no excuse. I did it just to become famous. It’s the worst thing a person can do to another, completely innocent person. He was very famous. I didn’t kill him for what kind of person he was. He was a family father. He was an icon. (..) I deeply regret the pain I (Joko Ono) hurt her. “

In 2015, a Japanese artist who has so far protested against all of Chapman’s early release requests revealed in The Daily Beast that she lives in constant fear that Chapman may be released from prison. “I believe – once he’s done it once, he can do it again, hurt someone else. The victim can be me, it can be Sean (son of Lennon and Ono), anyone else, so it’s a big risk.” told Ono.

Chapman was 25 years old at the time of the murder. He is now 65 years old, married and his wife lives near the prison, where he has been living for eight years after being transferred. Chapman is entitled to submit a further request for early release after two years.
