John Lennon’s 80th anniversary is commemorated with a selection of songs and a memorial concert

Since Lennon’s death, songs created during his solo career have been re-released in various selections and re-enactments. The selection “Gimme Some Truth” was first released 10 years ago, marking Lennon’s previous round anniversary. The new edition is unique in that the songs included in it, selected by the musician’s widow Yoko Ono and son Sean Lennon, have created a completely new mix of the original tracks, acquiring a completely new, more lyrical sound. The selection includes iconic songs that have entered the history of world music, such as “Give Peace a Chance”, “Instant Karma!”, “Power to the People”, “# 9 Dream”, “Mind Games”, “(Just Like) Starting Over”. and, of course, Lennon’s most famous composition, Imagine, as well as many other works. The selection is complemented by a richly illustrated print with lyrics, detailed Lennon and Ono commentaries on each song, and memories of Paul McCartney, Elton John, George Harrison and other friends and colleagues.

A concert commemorating the musician will also begin on October 9. The 40th annual John Lennon Honor Charity Concert, organized by the non-profit organization Theater Within, has been running the event since 1981. The concert will feature Petty Smith, Jackson Brown, Natalia Merchant, Rosanna Kesh and many other artists. It will be streamed for free online on the site LennonTribute.org from October 9 at 7 pm Eastern Time (October 10 at 2 am Latvian time) until midnight on October 12. Influenced by the Covid-19 pandemic, the organizers have decided this year to broadcast the concert in a digital environment, making it available to viewers around the world. The concert program will include unprecedented performances from other years’ concerts, as well as new versions of John Lennon and “The Beatles” songs performed by the above-mentioned musicians. This will be complemented by comments from Lennon’s contemporaries, creators and experts about his music and social activities.

John Lennon’s solo career lasted 10 years from the fall of The Beatles in 1970 until Lennon’s death on December 8, 1980. During this time, he – often with his wife Yoko Ono – created and recorded personal and open songs about various manifestations of the human condition, as well as the political and social situation of his time. Lennon’s music has not lost its relevance today, he often expressed a desire for change in his songs and encouraged others to do the same. Lennon has said, “I believe that the greatest pleasure in my life is writing songs, especially lyrics, that will remain meaningful for many years to come. These are songs that anyone can sing. Songs that will hopefully experience me. It’s the greatest pleasure. which charges me. “
