John de Mol – producer of The voice of Holland and a powerful media player in the Netherlands – gave the impression “completely unintentionally” in the episode of BOOS that he is “blaming women”. That says the media mogul and creator of the RTL talent hunt in a statement on Friday.

De Mol says he was “horrified” by all the reactions to the broadcast about sexually transgressive behavior behind the scenes at The voice of Holland. He is referring in particular to the advertisement in the AD, placed by women who work at his company Talpa. The full-page ad reads “Dear John, it’s not the women”.

“I really didn’t understand why women are angry about my words instead of the perpetrators of sexually abusive behaviour. This morning I was hit even more by an advertisement in the newspaper,” writes De Mol, who says that he immediately started talking with a number of women at the company. “I have mostly listened and now understand that, contrary to my good intentions, I have disregarded the fact that I have completely unintentionally created the impression that I am blaming women.”

the man behind The voice writes that it has become clear to him that women only report an incident if the culture at a company is experienced as safe.

De Mol blames himself for the fact that the culture within his company is not experienced as safe and will commit himself “to the full 100 percent” to change this. “I am open to learn more about this with the help of experts and to engage in a dialogue about this internally. I hope that this will also lead to a broader social discussion.” According to De Mol, that process started immediately at Talpa. He also accepted the invitation of the Dutch State Secretary for Culture Gunay Uslu to discuss this.

The media mogul stated in BOOS, among other things, that there were and are enough “counters” at producer ITV and The voice for young women to report misconduct. And that he hopes the events “set an example” and that if victims “it ever happen again” they have learned “to ring the bell immediately and report it immediately”.
