Joe Rogan closes deal with Spotify, podcast to be followed only there later this year

Comedian Joe Rogan has signed an exclusive deal with Spotify. As of the end of the year, his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE), just listen and see on the audio platform.

Joe Rogan has one of the most popular podcasts in the world. His program can be heard on all known podcast platforms, except on Spotify. On YouTube alone, he has over eight million followers. He is known for having a candid conversation with a variety of guests. He rarely prepares his conversations, creating an open atmosphere between him and his guests.

In episodes of sometimes more than three hours he talks to people from the standup comedy scene, the martial arts world and pop culture. But he is also not afraid of interviews with people from the medical and scientific fields. His episodes are invariably watched by several million people. So is his conversation last week with Tesla boss Elon Musk 12 million views.

Multi-year contract

In an announcement on YouTube, he explains that all his episodes will move to Spotify from September 1. “I have signed a multi-year contract effective September 1.” The podcast will remain on all other platforms until the end of the year, after which it can only be followed on the audio service, also on screen. His YouTube channel will soon only contain short fragments.

Spotify has been expanding the podcast section for some time. That they now have a big show like JRE bringing in the brand only makes it stronger. The service started testing video last month. By binding Rogan, they compete with YouTube.

Rogan has said several times in his shows that he is his own boss and does not like to be told what to do. Now he also emphasizes that it is “the same show as always with the same crew”. “I am not employed by Spotify. Nothing changes at all about the format. It will remain free. The only difference is that the podcast will soon be available on the largest audio platform in the world.”
