US President Joe Biden nominates Kenneth Merton as US Ambassador to Bulgaria. If his nomination is confirmed by the Senate, he will replace Hero Mustafa, who has been in Bulgaria since 2019. This was announced by Free Europe.

Kenneth Merton has served as US ambassador to Croatia and Haiti, and his latest mission is as a charter for the US embassy in Haiti. He was also an economic adviser at the US Embassy in Paris, according to his biography published by the White House.

Merton was also the Deputy Secretary of State in the United States Department of State. He has also served as Chief Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Global Talent Management at the State Department, and was previously Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Western Hemisphere Bureau.

Kenneth Merton holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami in Oxford, Ohio, and a master’s degree from the American University in Washington. He speaks Haitian Creole, French, German and Spanish.

He has won several awards for his work in aid of the victims of the earthquake in Haiti in 2010.

Hero Mustafa has been the US Ambassador to Bulgaria since September 2019. Her term is coming to an end.
