Joaquin Phoenix names son after deceased brother River | Show

Although the actors themselves are never very open about their private lives, the director flipped from documentary Gunda yesterday at the Zurich Film Festival from confession. Phoenix produced the documentary, but was not present. Kossakovsky said: “He just had a baby, a beautiful son named River, so he can’t promote this movie right now.”

River Phoenix was Joaquin’s older brother. At eighteen, he was one of the youngest Oscar-nominated actors ever, for his work in Running On Empty. He also received high praise for his role in My Own Private Idaho from 1991. The actor died of an overdose at the age of 23. Joaquin, who was very close to his brother, says he never really coped with the loss.
