A mink coat by Joe Namath, with the initials “JWN” (standing for Joseph William Namath) embroidered on the inside, is sold by Heritage Auctions auctioned. Also included with the coat is a signed 1969 copy of Esquire magazine and a signed football.
Namath, who became Super Bowl III MVP in 1969, was known not only for his performances on the field, but also for his personality and sense of style – or shall we say style. Particularly towards the end of his career, he wore mink coats and shades on the sidelines, a look that helped propel him to fame off the field, including in Hollywood.

Namath reveled in his role as a star in New York and became synonymous with mink coats in the 1970s. That, plus the fact that he predicted and led the Jets’ victory over the Colts in Super Bowl III, makes this mink coat a valuable piece.
As for the magazine, yes Namath appeared on the cover of Esquire in October 1969 with a cartoonwhich shows him throwing a football with a mink coat draped over his Jets uniform while standing on the roof of a skyscraper.
At the time, Namath was probably football’s biggest star, and the mink coat played no small part in that.
