Jesse Lingard ‘needed to get away from Manchester United’ and backed by England’s place if West Ham performances continue

Jesse Lingard needed to get away from Manchester United and can be part of England’s Euro team, according to Stuart Pearce.

Lingard joined West Ham on loan from United in January and has scored three goals and one assist in five Premier League appearances.

The 27-year-old hadn’t made a single league appearance for the Red Devils this season, but he’s rediscovering his form in the Hammers.

The midfielder has played 24 times for England, but the last one was in 2019.

West Ham assistant Pearce believes good performances could lead to a spot on Gareth Southgate’s team.

“He has come and has certainly given us another dimension at the club. He has a great bubbly personality. He fit right in with the guys, ”Pearce told talkSPORT Breakfast.

“I think he needed to get away from United. He wasn’t playing and whatever and this has revived him a bit and he’s enjoying his football a lot.

“I had the conversation with Jesse, shortly after he was here and I spoke to Gareth, and I said ‘there’s a chance and if your form is good, he always leaves the door open for the players.’

“For Jesse, and other Premier League players, who maybe weren’t in the last team, John Stones probably falls into that category as well, who are showing good form that Gareth can’t ignore.

“I would be delighted if Jesse’s form at our club could bring him back to the international field.”

Pearce also said Southgate has to find the “right formula” to suit the players he can turn to.

He added: “He’s very talented there, there’s no question about it. What he and Steve Holland have to do is find the right formula.

“Sometimes you put an ugly duckling on the team and everyone says ‘why did you do that?’ But that person makes the team work, makes them play and gives a good balance.

“That is the key to what you want to do. I spoke to Gareth three weeks ago and I know what it’s like for an international coach in a tournament, you just have to cross your fingers to avoid injury because there is no recovery time.

“You’ve certainly lost some players and you don’t want to lose more if possible.”
