Exhibition to Celebrate Centennial of Influential Latvian Artist Jemma Skulme
Riga, Latvia – the Latvian Saeima (Parliament) will host an exhibition, “Return,” honoring the 100th anniversary of Jemma Skulme, a celebrated Latvian painter, public figure, and politician. The exhibition opens this Thursday, September 25th, and offers a retrospective of her meaningful contributions to Latvian art and culture.
The opening ceremony will feature remarks from Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, alongside art historian Ilze Putniņa and Dainis Īvāns, head of the Awakening Museum of Painting.
Skulme’s work is widely recognized as a defining force in Latvian art from the latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st. Her paintings powerfully blend expressive techniques wiht themes of national identity, solidifying her place as a cornerstone of Latvian cultural heritage.
Beyond her artistic achievements, Skulme was a prominent voice during Latvia’s Awakening Movement, actively advocating for the nation’s independence. Her influence extended beyond the canvas, impacting public discourse and political processes, especially during periods of significant change.
“Return” will showcase not onyl Skulme’s paintings – including works by Alexander Mirlin and John Piez that are part of her artistic legacy – but also a glimpse into her creative process. The exhibition will feature personal items, including her notebooks and painting accessories, loaned from the artist’s family collection.
The exhibition opens at 10:30 AM in the Voting and Yellow Hall of the Saeima, located at Jēkaba Street 11.The public is invited to view the exhibition during the Saeima Open Day on Friday, September 26th, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
