Jeju employed 405,000 people in August … best ever

[한라일보]The number of employees in Jeju in August reached an all-time high. The increase in the number of workers in related industries has led to an increase in the number of employees due to the recovery of the tourist economy of the province. However, the increase is notable, especially among unpaid family workers and those aged 60 and over.

According to “Jeju Island Employment Trends in August” by Statistics Korea’s Jeju Office on the 18th, the number of employed in the province reached 405,000, an increase of 6.2% (24,000 people) compared to the same month last year, registering a all-time high. Furthermore, the number of employees, which exceeds 400,000 for the first time in history in June (402,000), remained at 400,000 for three consecutive months from July (401,000) to August. The employment rate in August was 70.3%, up 3.3 percentage points (p) from the same month last year.

The unemployment rate fell by 0.4 percentage points to 1.5%. The number of unemployed fell by 16.4% (1,000 people) to 6,000.

The recent increase in the number of employed in the province is a slight but steady increase in the population and as the number of local tourists in Jeju increases despite the COVID-19 situation, the demand for temporary workers in related sectors such as the Self-employment sector is increasing, and the number of unpaid family workers is also increasing due to rising prices and shortage of labor analyzed, etc.

Among self-employed workers, the number of self-employed workers increased by 0.3% compared to the same month of the previous year to 108,000, while the number of self-employed workers with employees increased by 4.9% (1,400 people) compared to the same month the previous year to 30,000, and the number of self-employed unemployed increased by 1.4% to 78,000 people (1,100 people) Although it decreased, it represents 72.2% of the total self-employed, indicating that there are many small workers climbing the self-employed. The number of unpaid family members also increased by 12.7% (3,000) compared to the same month of the previous year to 28,000.

Furthermore, if we consider the number of employed persons by age, the number of employed persons aged 60 or over stands at 94,000, an increase of 7.5% (6,600) compared to the same month of the previous year. The number of employees between the ages of 30 increased by 4.9% (3,300) to 70,000, from 4.4% (4,000) to 95,000 among the 40s and from 2.4% (2,200) to 93,000 in the 50s. The number of employees in their 20s increased by 15.8% (6,500) to 48,000.
